I can’t believe it’s already been a month since I started this little blog! Ok technically it’s been a month and 10 days, but whatever. I’ve been insanely busy the last 1.5 months as we not only moved to our first digital nomad base – Split – but I also had like a thousand assignments due for university. I’ve also stopped drinking coffee, as my coffee addiction got a bit out of hand. So as you can imagine, juggling travel, studying and blogging hasn’t been easy. But I’ve definitely enjoyed it a lot and feel like I’ve not only learnt a lot in this first month (and 10 days) but have also made some progress already.
Traffic + Post Engagement
Traffic: So I didn’t get a whole lotta traffic this month obviously. But considering it was my first month, I’m still pretty happy about it. I had a total of 996 page views in the past month (so the last 28 days) from 210 visitors. Now, this might actually be less than due to weird spam traffic (need to look into this). About 100 page views were from strange sources, so I am unsure whether or not these are real. This wouldn’t make a huge difference though, so I’m ignoring it for now.
Engagement: I tried to leave a few comments on other blogs every now and again, and occassionally a blogger found their way back to my blog and left a comment. I definitely want to do this more next month. Plus, exploring other travel blogs is kinda fun!
Social Media Following and Growth
Instagram: So my main focus of this first month was my Instagram. Anyway, since creating it about 6 weeks ago I’ve grown it to 858 followers and I’ve recently started getting over 100 likes on most post. I’ve been trying to post once a day, which I’ve been able to do most of the time.
Twitter: I’ve been less active on Twitter, as my focus was on Instagram this month. My Twitter account currently has 927 followers and each post gets a few likes/ retweets or responses. I definitely need to step up my Twitter game and be more active on this platform.
Pinterest: I haven’t really done anything with my Pinterest account, hence I only have 76 followers. I know that Pinterest is really important and can drive a lot of traffic, so this is something I need to start improving soon.
Facebook: This is where I’ve literally done nothing. Hence why my page has a sad 16 likes only. But hey, at least I’ve made a Facebook page. It’s a first step I guess.
Total followers across social media platforms: 1877
How I achieved this
Following people: I followed people on Pinterest/ Twitter/ Instagram. On Twitter, I also added people to lists. This was also for me so that I could easily scan through content depending on what I was looking for. On Instagram, I usually also liked or commented on a few posts as well as following the person. I wasn’t very active on Pinterest this month and have not followed too many people, due to a lack of time. I have now stopped following new people on Instagram (unless I really like the person’s feed), as I don’t want to clutter my feed and as I don’t want to do the follow-unfollow thing.
Auto-DMs: I did not send any Auto-DMs myself, but I did read the ones I got on Twitter. I liked/ followed the social media accounts that were sent to me and responded with a link to mine. I did this once or twice, but found it to be very time-consuming and it didn’t lead to much reciprocation. Hence I won’t be doing this anymore.
Engaging with other people’s content: On Twitter this meant liking and responding to posts. I also occasionally shared blog posts of other people. However, as I’ve quickly noticed that I can’t focus on everything at once and decided to start with Instagram, I’ve stopped doing this on Twitter. I do think it was a succesful growth strategy and I will resume doing it this month. On Instagram I tried to engage as much as possible with other accounts in the same niche, which seems to be a good way to gain engaged followers.
Instagram Engagement Groups: I joined an Instagram Engagement group/ Comment pond, but have not really participated much. I don’t think this is very helpful for an account of my size. I also would like to have control over what I like/ comment on. I’m not really sure how I feel about this to be honest, I might still use this in the future, but for now I want to focus on growing my account in different ways.
- I’ve managed to get 3 dofollow backlinks.
- I’ve installed Yoast SEO plugin but other than that don’t really know what I’m doing SEO wise. I have a lot to learn.
- I’ve registered for Google Analytics and have verified my site. I’ve also submitted my site to Google using Google Webmaster Tools and have submitted my sitemap. I chose to submit the sitemap created by Yoast, rather than the Jetpack one. I am not sure which one is better at the moment so I might change this in the future.
Goals and focus points for December/ January:
As it’s kind of the middle of the month and there’s the holidays coming up, my goals and focus points are for the rest of December and all of January combined. I’ve tried to make them as specific as possible.
